Stormwater management for a commercial development in Hoppegarten

Since 1993 a large industrial and commercial site arose in the area of the racetrack belonging to the municipality of "Dahlwitz-Hoppegarten".

The existing maximum allowable discharge of 400 l /s was not enough to drain the waters from the outlet. In addition to the fact that Modifications to the outflow structure where not possible, the low infiltration capacity of the soil (kf=10-7 m/s) made it very difficult for rain water to infiltrate.

As a result of these limiting factors, an innovative storm water system was planned and consisted of channeling the runoff into a network of swales and retention trenches implemented in privet and public areas along with a semi-centralized infiltration system.

The newly proposed measures were to be combined with the existing system to have a minimal storm water load going through the existing outflow.

Following the long term simulation modelling results; 10-20 % of storm water runoff will go through the system outlet whereas the rest will be retained upstream to be infiltrated and evaporated.
