Integrated Water Management strategy for “Tempelhofer Freiheit”
Goal
“Tempelhofer Freiheit” consisting of the historic airport building, the park on the former airfield and future areas to be developed (residential and commercial), needed an integrated and sustainable water management plan.
Concept
The water management concept required, for the 400 ha area, needed to tackle the adaptability of the site in regards to its urban surrounding. It should also consist of innovative and non-conventional solutions.
The concept for the parkland was considered for the “GROSS .MAX” design competition.
Approach
The measures were adapted to the site specific conditions of each area. Various treatments were considered ranging from centralized to decentralized systems as well as green roofs. The outcomes favored an optimal water recycling and usage for domestic and commercial consumption, building cooling and irrigation.
It is important to note that the used approach addressed social, environmental and economic impact with regards to investment/operating cost and potential future developments.
