Integrated flood protection and rainwater management for “Panke”

Task

In parallel to the river restoration plans in the “Panke” catchment, Flood protection concepts were needed to be developed and implemented in the project.

The current and projected flooding scenarios were investigated in order to generate a flood hazard map along with a reliable strategy for flood mitigation and adaptation. The study included rainfall generated runoff resulting from design storms of 20, 50 and 100 years return period.

Approach

Based on the latest site data and in order to propose flood mitigation measures, a hydrological and a hydraulic model were developed.

The software used for this purpose were; “STORM”, for Rainfall-Runoff modelling and “WaspTools”, for the 1D hydraulic computation. In addition to the issue of flood hazard, water quality was also assessed with the pollution load module in STORM.

All along the project course workshops and meetings were held with involved stakeholders, in order to achieve an optimal stormwater management strategy for the catchment.
