Flood and heat prevention in urban development

The ExWoSt studies flood and heat prevention through urban development, for the purpose of examining strategies and measures for mitigating; urban flash floods and overheating of cities.

Background

The consequences of climate change are an increase in extreme weather events, heavy rainfall and long periods of hot weather. Urban regions are particularly vulnerable to these effects. In most cases the outcomes are immense material damage to infrastructure and sometimes loss of lives, putting affected population under significant multi-hazard threats.

Objective

The aim of the case study is to define and discuss the challenges of heat waves, droughts and flooding where resilience-boosting strategies will be identifies. On this basis, strategies and instruments for water sensitive urban development are developed. Further routes are shown on how the issue of adaptation to climate change can be more seriously integrated into the concepts, plans and procedures of cities and municipalities.
